Tips for Beautiful Fall or Winter Photos

So, who says you can only take photos before the holidays? There is a special kind of magic that comes with outdoor, winter photo sessions.  Here are some tips to make your winter or fall photo sessions go smoothly.

1.     Dress warmly. You will be surprised at how often this is overlooked. Since you’ll be standing outside for a long period of time, short sleeves, thin fabrics, and open toe shoes will not be comfortable for very long. Shivering makes it hard to look happy and pose properly.

2.     Wear sunscreen. Protecting your skin should be a priority throughout the year, not just in summer. Use a good moisturizer to protect your skin from chilly winds.

3.     Watch the weather. Warmer days may seem more pleasant but melting snow can change the entire look of your backdrop. If you are looking for light snow flurries, try and keep an eye on the weather forecast to make sure that you don’t end up with melting or heavy snow.

4.     Be flexible. If the weather isn't exactly what you had hoped for, see if you can still make the photo session work. If you are however scheduling this session in advance, you may just have to work with the weather on that particular day.

5.     Incorporate color. Even though fall and winter have some amazing colors to work with, why not wear a splash of color to really stand out in your photos? For example, vibrant shades of blues and greens look amazing amongst crunchy brown leaves.

6.     Plan your day. Taking your photos just after the sun rises or just before it sets will provide you with amazing lighting so try and plan your session around those times.

Take some hot tea or coffee along to make your photo session even more enjoyable and get ready for some beautiful results.

Happy New Year!

I don't know about you but for the New Year is a time to reorganize!  Try as I might organization is not something that comes naturally to me, I have to work for it.  Beautiful calendars are one thing that helps me do that.  If you are anything like me, you will love these gorgeous printables brought to us by NAPCP (The National Associate of Professional Photographers).

Make sure you've got enough ink in your printer and print away!

Newborn Session | San Jose, CA

There is nothing more precious than this newly established family of four.  Noe & Corey waited patiently for their perfect little boy & girl to arrive precisely on schedule.  A few weeks later now they are settling into the new routine of being first time parents with not one but two babies!  They seem to be totally comfortable assuming their new roles as Dads to these sweet little babies.  With their personalities already shining through I can't wait for future sessions with this adorable family!

enjoy,

Maternity Session | Los Gatos, CA

With the holidays coming up just around the corner it was a wonderful evening to capture the golden Fall light along with all the amazing foliage Vasona Park has to offer.

We all enjoyed ourselves walking and exploring the beautiful scenery together.

With twins due in February, one boy and one girl, this sweet couple has a lot to prepare for :)

ATG (pup) is not so sure about this!

Perfect announcement!

What to Wear this Fall?

It is important to remember simple is better for photos.  You don't want too much craziness going on, while simultaneously looking fabulous!

Color:  Pick one or two solid colors to build off and then use a fun pop of color of pattern to accent the whole look.
Layers:  This is California and it is Fall, so yes yes yes!  Not only will it add dimensionality and a change in look, it will keep you warm!
Accessories: Another important way to add excitement to your look - scarves, suspenders, sunglasses can all be great ways to just add that little extra spark to make your photos shine!

All these looks and more can be found at Gap with great deals ending tomorrow!

Fall sessions are booking up quickly so contact us today!

Hope to see you soon!

Family Session | Mountain View, CA

So, it had been two years since I had the pleasure of photographing this family but when we met up at Shoreline Park a few weeks ago it was as though we hadn't missed a beat!

The session started with a rousing game of hide & seek between the kids and Dad...

She was our seeker

Mom and Dad finally got a shot of just the two of them, which hasn't happened since their wedding! *gasp*

My aim is to always make everyone feel at ease in front of the camera.  This little guy who is normally very camera shy and always puts on the 'cheese' smile is the perfect example of what a difference feeling comfortable can make.  There's no 'cheese' here!

This session was a gift for Mom and the thing she wanted most was to replace a similar shot we did at our last session two years ago of her and the kids - see below.

Time for pizza! yay!!

Wardrobe Wednesday

Absolutely loving this week's looks from Crew Cuts at J.Crew.  With Spring just around the corner this look evokes the fun Summer will bring and the coordination is superb.  Multiple patterns but nothing to overwhelming because the anchor is echoed in Baby's onesie and the polka dots, well are just awesome! :)  With everything in a very similar color scheme you are able to do a bit more with accessories and patterns.

These looks and so many more are available at J.Crew right now, go check them out!  What are you waiting for?

Enjoy!

Wardrobe Wednesday

This week's Wardrobe Wednesday comes from the Boden Spring 2015 collection, they just make some really darn cute stuff!  Also, I went with a snowy theme in honor of not-so-super snow storm Juno on the East Coast and for those of you Californian's heading up to Tahoe or another snowy getaway for the upcoming school holiday.  The graphics are just too cute to pass up and this week they are doing a different deal everyday so you should check it out, today is was 20% off of all tops!

Enjoy!

Family Session | Hidden Villa, Los Altos, CA

Wow, how have I not visited this spot before?!  Thank you to the C family for introducing me because I will definitely be back!  Hidden Villa is a nonprofit organization with beautiful grounds that also operates it's own organic farm and it's in Los Altos!  There are hiking trails & animals galore, even 1 month old piglets nestled with their Momma when we visited last week.

These boys brought the fun and I was just the lucky one able to run around with them and capture their pure joy!

Also, thanks to Weingarten Children's Center for connecting me with this awesome family!

Brews & Brats

Adding hops

Today's post is a bit off topic but we had so much fun making beer and sausages (both from scratch) that I had to share!  Yesterday was the epitome of Sunday Funday, we had some friends over to break in the new meat grinder attachment for our Kitchen-Aid mixer.  Let's get a hooray for wedding presents ;)

Admittedly, it's a pretty gross process making sausage.  Unless you are someone who truly enjoys playing with raw meat...I've never met such a person but to each his own :)

We were so excited we made THREE different types of sausage!

After careful taste testing we voted that the cheesesteak sausage was the true winner so I've posted the recipe for you below.

Cheesesteak Sausage
  • 3 lbs beef chuck (Cut into 1 in. cubes)
  • 2 bell peppers
  • 1 onion
  • 5 garlic cloves
  • salt & pepper to taste
Sauté the peppers and onions.  After coarsely grinding the beef combine all ingredients and put in the freezer for about a half an hour then grind again through the fine plate on your grinder and into the casing.  Make sure that you chop or grind your garlic before the fine grind or you'll end up with pockets of garlic love as we did, which was interesting but luckily didn't ruin the overall flavor at all!

Round it all out with a delicious red pale ale and you too could have an awesome Sunday Funday with friends!
